This is a copy of the French Model 1840 but with a "cock's comb" upper finial on the muzzle-ring and slightly longer blade (22 ¾” as compared to 20 ¼” on the Model 1840). The blade is steel, single-edged, fullered (both sides), with a re-curved or "yataghan-shape." The condition of the blade is very good.
These bayonets were widely copied and used by many countries, including the United States, Belgium, and Germany. On this bayonet the flat of the blade has a beehive mark while the cross-guard features a “T” near the grip and “D&W” on the lower quillion. This bayonet has a brass grip with a spring steel latching arrangement on the right side; button on the left. Adjacent to this “button” are unit or rack numbers “5 / 132”. The cross-guard is steel and with a "cock's comb" muzzle-ring finial pointing forward. The lower quillion is hooked and pointing to the rear.
It is believed some of these were used during the American Civil War when many European arsenals were emptied of their surplus arms. [jet]
