This excellent condition bayonet is an original American Civil War ‘Zouave’ style saber bayonet. The total length of this bayonet is 25 inch while the graceful-looking blade itself is 20 1/16” long. Issued with the Remington “Zouave” Rifle, a.k.a. United States Percussion Model 1863 Rifle, the saber bayonet’s lines are simple and direct. The bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman.
The 4 7/8 long all-brass cast hilt is secured to the blade via a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Ribbed brass grip area displays an attractive mellow yellow colored patina. Upper top flat of grip area stamped with “BH” just to the rear of the guard. Blade is shiny and factory bright. It has no nicks, dents or staining. Blade is stamped with an “S“ at the hilt. The brass hilt guard is stamped with sub-inspector mark of “C” on one side and “L” on the other.
This is a handsome “Zouave” bayonet and a great Military collectable. [KN] [ph:L]
