[See Reilly, American Socket Bayonets, p. 90, figs. 107/107a]. Maker-mark: “C & Co.” [Collins & Co. / Hartford, Ct.] appears in small lettering on the mortise. Sub-inspector “m” on opposite arm. Bayonet exhibits light salt & pepper patina, replete with patches of condensation. Also some scratching & a few moderate dings. Else VG.
The Sharps rifle bayonet is virtually identical in profile to the M1855 socket, but with slightly larger socket & bore diameters. Sharp’s rifle owners take note that only 4400 of these bayonets were produced, and that they’re becoming scarce.
