This Carl Eickhorn (second pattern) Army officer’s dagger is in near mint, uncleaned condition. It does not appear to have been touched since the war. This type of dagger is shown on pages 24-28 of Thomas T. Wittmann’s reference book, Exploring the Dress Daggers of the German Army. Carl Eickhorn of Solingen was the first and most prestigious maker of the German Army officer’s dagger; the company made four patterns of the Army dagger between 1935-1945, each pattern with subtle differences in design details. The Eickhorn pre-war production quality is evident in the expensive nickel-silver construction with crisp details visible in the casting of the pommel, crossguard, ferrule and scabbard. The age patina of the nickel-silver fittings is exceptional – and uncommon as most of these Germans daggers have been cleaned at some point since the war. The grip is the desirable dark yellow color. The scabbard is completely free from dents or pushes, and still retains its correct Eickhorn flat-head scabbard screw. The blade is exceptional and the reverse ricasso bears the Eickhorn squirrel logo used from 1935 to 1940. The dagger also still retains its original tan leather throat washer which is firmly in place. An exceptional piece all around and still in untouched condition after 80 years! Pre/early-war German Army officer’s daggers rarely come on the market in this condition!  [SK]
