ETCHED BLADE CLIP POINT BOWIE KNIFE BY JOSEPH ALLEN & SON

Item Code: 30-2145

The etching on this bowie knife blade still has its frosting. Measuring about 11 ½ inches overall, the blade is 7 inches and features a crisp “Joseph / Allen & Son / Sheffield / England” maker’s stamp at the ricasso, and a sharp “NON*XLL” stamp just below the back edge on the reverse. The obverse is left blank. The edge and point are excellent, with no sign of sharpening and just the slightest bit of darkening at the very tip. A broad etched panel bordered with floral and geometric motifs borders the word “FRONTIER” in large letters on the lower portion of the blade, extending below the clip point to within roughly 2 ½ inches of the tip. The blade shows some wipes from being drawn from a scabbard and there are very some minor rubs along the bottom border of the etched panel. The bottom left of the first N of the stamped motto is a tad light, but overall the knife rates excellent. The stag grip slabs likewise are excellent with no cracks or chips. Allen started using the NON-XLL (“none excel”) motto in the early 1880s, dating the knife to the late 19th century.  [sr]
