Item Code: 2021-172

The First Model Luftwaffe dagger replaced the dagger of the paramilitary Deutscher Luftsport Verband (DLV) in 1935 with the unveiling of the Luftwaffe in open contravention of the Versailles Treaty. Wear was at first restricted to flying officers, but was relaxed to include others and with the introduction of the Second Model in 1937 the First was relegated to high ranking NCOs.

This follows the standard pattern with straight, double-edges stiletto type blade going from hexagonal cross-section with raised center flat on each side to a spearpoint with raised median ridge. The blade is bright with some thin gray spots, unmarked, and has a good edge and point. The blade pad is in place. The hilt has a cast, nickel or silver plated alloy cross guard is in the form of extended, horizontal, down swept, stylized wings with a raised, central, circular panel with a wheel-shaped swastika. The pommel is the same material with the same wheel-shaped swastika in a circle. Pommel and crossguard have matching untouched and light gray patinas with areas of muted-silver showing, which match the scabbard mounts as well. The grip wrap shows some scattered wear spots. The wire binding is in place. The scabbard excellent, with the blue leather covered body matching the grip. The chain hangers with snap clip are still attached. The clip bears the “Ges. Gesch.” patent stamp and “OLC/[diamond]” company mark of Overhoff.

This is a nice, honest example of German WW2 luftwaffe dagger.  [sr] [ph:L]
