The blade on this saber meas. approx. 1 3/8 at the ricasso and is approx. 33.75 inches long. The blade has a slight curve and a clipped point. The surface of the blade is semi-bright with moderate scattered mottling. The edge has approx. six nicks, three of which are a little larger than normal. The ricasso is marked “N. STARR” at the ricasso with “P, HHP” in two lines at right angles to the Starr marking. The original leather washer is present.
The hilt is set at an acute angle which is proper for these swords. The grip is of ribbed leather with an iron ferrule at bottom and an iron back strap that ends in a simple bird head pommel. The knuckle bow is also made of iron and is “D” shaped. The top is cut to receive a sword knot. The face of the knuckle bow is stamped with a “P.” The iron surfaces have darkened with age.
The scabbard is iron and was japanned black originally but at some point was repainted. Both mounts and rings are present. The scabbard has a number of dents most of which are in the bottom third. This area has one small closed crack. This bottom third is also heavily pitted. The drag still has the reinforcing band at bottom.
