Presented here is a wonderful representative of an original Confederate “dog river style” cavalry saber.  Carried by Southern cavaliers during the War Between the States, this specimen is the most usual Confederate saber encountered in the collecting community and it bears a strong resemblance to the Federal Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber.

The grips on this rebel edged weapon exhibit a tapered, grooved wooden handle that is wrapped tightly in original, painted black canvas and wound with a large gauge, single, untwisted brass wire.  Canvas wrap has some light scuffing in spots. The strong cast brass hilt features a symmetrical, two-branch guard with knucklebow mated to a heavy crude brass pommel cap of the Phrygian-helmet pattern.  No leather pad or washer is present at bottom of hilt. The hilt wiggles a bit. All brass has acquired a light patina.

The steel curved blade with a flat back has a length of 35½”, a width of 1 1/8” with a single, 26.00” long, unstopped fuller on either flat. The overall length of the sword from point to pommel is 41.00.”  Blade wears a dusky medium-gray sheen overall with scattered mottling and very light scattered surface pitting. The true edge of the blade has numerous nicks.

There is no scabbard.   [ad]
