Manufactured: Philadelphia, PA  Maker: Horstmann & Sons  Year: C 1850  Model: Sergeant*s

Size: 31.6 inch blade length, 1.2 in. wide and .33 thick  Condition: Excellent+

The Marine Corps is the only branch of service found to have a regulation for a Sergeant's Sword. Other branches called for an N.C.O. (non-commissioned officer) sword which could have been carried by corporals as well as sergeants. This example is a Horstmann product and is the "Marine Sergeant's Sword". The guard is brass and marked Horstmann on the underside. The grip is leather covered wood with dragoon style wire wrap. The eagle pommel and backstrap are all one piece with the backstrap being secured into a wide, .91 inch, ferrule at the base of the grip. There are small, plain langets on either side and the scabbard throat is notched to accept them. The curved blade is 31&5/8 inches long with a single fuller and blue and gold decoration. It is marked W. H. Horstmann & Sons / Philadelphia and Warranted just above the ricasso. It displays scrolls, Federal shield with stands of arms. The scabbard is back seamed leather and mounted with a brass throat (frog stud only) and a brass drag. Both mounts are pinned with a single brass pin.
