$1,850.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 30-2014

This sword is a very good example of an original, non-regulation hilt, Civil War model 1850 foot officer’s sword assembled by the Newark, New Jersey firm of Henry Sauerbier. This quality, embellished sword is complete with its handsome French-embellished style face guard without a backstrap and a classic black leather scabbard adorned with brass mountings.

The handsome, slightly curved steel blade measures 32” long, 1” width, and a 27” long unstopped fuller. The narrow fuller is 11 ½”. Blade is clean but exhibits large areas of darker spotting.  Both flats of the blade exhibit the Sauerbier-style of leafy floral motifs acid etching and the odd styled “U.S.” on one side. All etchings visible. The blade is etched on the ricasso with “H. SAUERBIER / NEWARK / N.J.”  Sauerbier’s sword characteristics are also evident in the large unstopped fuller, unique bulbous serifs or fishtail serifs on the large letters “US”, and the X-pattern etched on the obverse ricasso. Slightly rounded blade back etched with “iron proof” which is only faintly visible. Blade is in good condition with no nicks. The large, ornate French-styled, cast brass hilt is typical and displays a cutout backstrap integrated into the knucklebow. Hilt is tight to the tang. Leather washer present. Brass pommel is decorated with laurel leaf casting.  Brass wears an uncleaned, mellow patina. Grips are in very good condition and feature an original black leather covered wooden handle secured with fine double-twisted copper wire flanked by a single thread of wire on each side, all tightly wound around the handle.  Leather grip is excellent with no cracking or loss.

The original, black leather scabbard is in very good condition.  Leather body wears a black finish with few scattered scuffs with some light crazing visible.  Stitching is original and tight. Brass scabbard furniture consists of a throat with 1” brass ring, a center mount with 1” suspension ring, and the drag. All three pieces feature detailed floral engravings on one side. All three pieces remain tight to the scabbard.  All three small set screws are present. Scabbard drag shows no edgewear. A solid sword and scabbard.   [jet]
