This is a prop sword from the September 1892 production of “1492”. Blade is a saber bayonet-style, 22 ½” long with a single edge and 14” fullers. Blade is clean with a pleasing gray color and mottled dark patches overall. A heavy cast brass handle is firmly attached and bears a mellow bronze color. There is a cross guard and intricate details cast into all portions of the handle. One side of the grip bears the image of a suit of armor and crossed halberds. The opposite side features a profile bust of Christopher Columbus and has “RICE’S / SURPRISE PARTY / 1492” surrounding in bold raised lettering. This is a solid and heavy sword/theater prop.
“1492” opened at the Park Theatre in Boston, presented by Robert Barnet. Subtitled, “Rice's Surprise Party . . . an historical extravaganza in three acts burdened with the fascinating numerical title, 1492 up to date or very near it.” Robert Barnet, “The Extravaganza King”, held productions from 1891 through 1906 at various venues in Boston, always starring the all-male company in the manner of Harvard's Hasty Pudding, in this production he starred himself as Queen Isabella, to the delight of the public.
