Standard cadet sword that is stamped with inspector marks RC and JWR on the underside of the cross guard. Rufus Chandler inspected swords from 1831-1850 so this places the sword in this time period. Standard brass guard has taken on a nice patina. Grip is brass impressed to resemble wire which is similar to the NCO sword. Blade has a single central fuller and is double edged. Blade does not retain original polish and etch is worn as this sword was obviously carried by many cadets during its use. Obverse blade etch is fan foliate - NP Ames Cutler Springfield / foliate / non-medical caduceus - foliate / US surrounded by sun rays / foliate. Reverse etch is fan foliate / stand of arms - liberty cap / Eagle with EPU ribbon with sun burst above / foliate. Steel scabbard has a frog stud and simple bladed drag.
