The blade on this item is in excellent condition. It is bright and clean with only light scattered mottling in places. The drawn sword meas. approx. 36.25 inches long from point to pommel. It has a stopped fuller that meas. approx. 21.50 inches long with a narrow fuller that meas. 15.50 inches long. The true edge has four small nicks scattered along its length.

The etching on the blade is strong. The obverse etching features a spread-winged eagle with an “E PLURIBUS UNUM” riband in his beak and a patriotic shield on his chest within a sunburst with a scrolled edged frame. Above the ricasso the blade is marked with “TIFFANY & CO. NEW YORK” within a ribbon. The reverse of the blade features a stylized block “US” amongst foliate within a scrollwork frame. Above the ricasso on this side is etched “WARRANTED TO CUT WROUGHT IRON.” The ricasso itself is strongly marked with P.D.L. in an elongated circle. Leather washer is present at the base of the ricasso.

The detailed brass hilt features a guard and knucklebow with a delicately cast single-band with cutout oak leaf scrolls and acanthus leaves. Brass hilt is tight to the blade tang. Hilt features a grooved, center-swelled wooden handle wrapped in high quality gray sharkskin. Skin is tightly bound with twisted brass wire. Normal seam is evident on the back side of the grip. Brass pommel is decorated with ornate scrollwork of laurel leaves and features a tiered domed cap. One side of pommel cap has a thin 0.75 inch long drip of white paint. Casting on the hilt and pommel is well executed. Overall the hilt is in excellent condition.

The leather scabbard is solid with no crazing but does have small amounts of surface finish loss. Brass mounts and drag are plain. Both mount rings are present. Drag exhibits several small dents. Lower mount moves a bit due to leather shrinkage. Scabbard is really in exceptionally good condition for its age.  [ad]
