This is a government inspected sword made by and marked: N. P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield. The sword has a boat-shaped guard with beaded trim. The knuckle bow also has a bead design. The ball shaped pommel has a cap that screws on to the threaded tang of the blade to hold the sword together. The grips are sheet silver rolled and pressed into a rope design. They are slightly cone shaped with half sliding down over the wood core from the top and half sliding up from the bottom making the center a slight bulge. The top of the pommel is engraved with sun ray or star pattern on all 4 flat sides as well as a star on the top. An 8-pointed star is also on the very end of each quillon. The frosty etched blade has fine floral, Cannon, flags a wreath around a U.S. an eagle with ribbon and a loge with draperies and tassel.
