Model 1840 Tiffany cavalry sabre. Esteemed German manufacturer P.D. Luneschloss produced these iron hilted sabres for Tiffany and Company of New York. The hilts are made from four pieces and there are three slightly different sizes in hilts found on Tiffany sabres. This example is in very good condition. The iron hilt has a dark patina; the leather grip shows some aged wear. The wire wrap is generally tight, with the lower three bands slightly loose. The washer at the ricasso is not present. Ricasso is boldly marked “Tiffany & Co. New York” and more faintly “PDL” in an oval cartouche. The blade has a clean, silver patina free of rust and blemishes. It appears to have been sharpened. The scabbard, from throat to drag has a dark, rust-free patina and houses the sabre snugly. There is a small indentation at the lower third of the scabbard. [jc]
