The overall length of the drawn sword is approx. 38.50 inches. The blade itself meas. approx. 32.75 inches long and is just over an inch wide at the ricasso. The blade has a central stopped fuller that meas. approx. 23.25 inches long.

The blade surface is bright and clean with minor surface pitting visible on both sides of the lower third of the blade. The etching on the obverse side begins with a Star of David on the ricasso surrounded by a scroll. At center is a brass disc stamped with “HW.” The etching then continues with a floral and scroll decoration. At center are opposing angel wings pierced by a double pointed spear with a twisted shaft. This is surrounded by “ROYAL ENGINEERS.” The reverse ricasso is etched with “HENRY WILKINSON PALL MALL LONDON.” The rest of the blade is decorated with the same floral and scrollwork as found on the opposite side. At center are the script initials “VR” surmounted by a Queen’s crown in a laurel wreath and topped by a sunburst. Below the initials is a crossed laurel and palm. The etching is slightly raised and is strong and very detailed. A thick leather washer is present at the base of the blade. The top of the spine at the ricasso is numbered “11754.”

The hilt has a wide basket made of brass that is decorated with cut out scrollwork with finely chased detailing. Basket is slightly curved on the sides. The tiered brass pommel is decorated at top with crosshatching. The back of the grip has a brass spine with crosshatched decoration at bottom. The grip itself is wrapped in gray sharkskin with seven courses of twisted brass wire outlined on each side by a thinner gauge twisted wire. The base of the grip is covered with a brass ferrule.

The brass scabbard has several small dings and dents on both sides but nothing serious. Both mounts and rings are present and undecorated. The drag is plain as well. The top mount has a brass bar attached to its reverse side in addition to the ring.

All brass surfaces look to be untouched and have a very nice light patina.    [sr]
