An exceptionally nice example of a Sheble and Fisher 1840 pattern cavalry saber. There is some feeling these may have been produced on a so-far-unknown government contract, but were not given inspector marks, like a small number of artillery sabers produced by the company that are known to have been purchased by the Ordnance Department and are likewise unmarked. Thillmann, in any case, rates these as scarce.

This has a very nice grip with good finish to the leather and with full wire binding. The brass hilt has a medium patina. The blade pad is in place under the guard. The blade is in the bright and even shows the original cross-polishing at the base of the blade on either side with just one two tiny gray spots and a little rubbing near the throat from sheathing and unsheathing. The edge and point are good.

The steel scabbard is very good, with throat, both bands and sling rings in place and  the characteristically somewhat large drag used by Sheble and Fisher. The scabbard has no pitting, is smooth, metal and shows a thin brown, age patina.

This would make a nice addition to a Civil War, cavalry, or U.S. sword collection. It is a scarce saber in exceptionally good condition.  [SR]
