This rare sword has two outer branches to the guard, making a large cavalry type basket hilt. The brass hilt still shows areas of original gold gilting. The cavalry length, single unstopped fuller blade has a long, flat ricasso. The leather grip has a fine strand of double twisted wire. The steel scabbard, with a lapped Confederate seam, is brass mounted with two ring mounts and a brass throat and drag. The sword has a beautiful untouched patina, super grip, gold quillon left on the hilt, and the scabbard is undented.
A sword by the same maker is pictured in Confederate Swords by Albaugh, supplement section back, pages 14/15.
Sold Hendershott catalog (listing included) for $18,500. [gj] [ph:L]
