The N.P. Ames Cabotville address was used up to 1847. The Chicopee address started in 1848. This scabbard has the early applied rectangle box with N.P. Ames / Cabotville and the blade has the Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass. This entire sword has heavy gilt with applied silver PD letters on the langet. The blade has beautiful etching of oak branch with acorns, military trophies, U.S. Pay Department center panel, a large caduceus and finishes the obverse design with an oak branch with acorns. The reverse has the dry needle mark of Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass with oak, arms. Federal Eagle, E. PU ribbon another large caduceus and oak leaves. The gilt brass scabbard must have been a left over from Cabotville and has the standard mounts with the drag having wide "wings" found on the higher grade and earlier scabbards.
