Civil War imported (W. Clauberg - Solingen) Model 1850 foot officer’s sword in fair overall original condition complete with its matching leather scabbard. Blade has a dusky gray appearance and measures 30” long by 1” wide with a stopped fuller 22” long with a narrow fuller of 15” long. Total length of sword is 36”. Reverse ricasso marked with maker’s name “W. CLAUBERG” and obverse ricasso bears the stamping of the standing knight. Reverse flat is etched with a short (5½” long) intricate floral design that flanks large letters “U.S.” in script. Obverse flat has a fine detailed spreadwinged eagle and both etchings shows traces of gold wash. Entire blade appears to have been cleaned sometime ago and retains a pleasing appearance but does display light scattered peppery pitting near the blade point as well as a number of small edge nicks.
Cast brass hilt has a shallow guard and knucklebow with a detailed cast face with a floral and oak leaf scroll. Pommel is decorated with the laurel leaf scrollwork and features a tiered flat domed brass cap. Both hilt and pommel are loose to the tang. Leather pad is present. Sharkskin grips are in original, good condition and show normal use. Single-twisted brass wire unbroken but is loose in few of the grooves. Casting detail of hilt and pommel clean and defined with some wear.
Black leather scabbard, with its brass furniture and drag, is unmarked and in fair condition overall. The scabbard’s plain brass bands and drag have a single line of tooling along the edges. Scabbard leather body exhibits a myriad of light crazing scattered about with few spots of scuffing. Body also shows a modern repair at the top of the lower band area. Upper band is loose. All brass furniture wear a mellow bronze patina, never cleaned. No maker’s stamp on the scabbard. An original, complete imported Model 1850-foot Civil War officer’s sword at a reasonable price.
