This straight sword with its metal scabbard is an original 1818 contract piece made by the firm of Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut. The US Ordnance Dept. in December 1818 contracted with Nathan Starr for 4,000 such infantry NCO swords for use by the army. Delivered between 1819 and 1820, this Starr single-edged saber measures 30¾” long overall and has a 25¾” long, sturdy steel blade with an unstopped wide fuller that extends to 6” from the point. Steel blade has been cleaned and exhibits a dull gray sheen overall. Has light rust pitting and a number of small nicks to the blade edge.

Reverse ricasso is horizontally stamped with “N.STARR / US / P (proved) / L. S. (Luther Sage).” Still retains its original washer. Obverse ricasso is plain. Iron hilt is tight to the tang. Grips have a ribbed wood handle covered with black leather and have an iron ferrule at the guard. Leather wrap is in very good condition. P-type knucklebow joins a convex pommel that almost resembles a bird’s head shape.

The 26” long iron scabbard has much or the original japanned black paint. Has a small iron stud or finial tightly set into an iron lozenge-shaped disc secured to the upper body of the scabbard. Body shows moderate scratches. No dents or cracks. No suspension rings. Drag tight. In very good overall condition, would make an interesting specimen to any blade display or collection.
