This is a complete Model 1861 lock for the .58 caliber, Springfield rifle musket in very good condition. Produced by the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts.
All metal is clean with a light pewter patina. Lock plate features a very crisp spread-winged eagle motif stamped between hammer and the cut out for the bolster. Under this cut out is clearly stamped, “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”. Behind the hammer is the date, “1863”.
Although dated 1863, this is the Model 1861 lock as it has the “C”-shaped hammer.
On the back side, all components are present, and in perfect condition. Many small inspector’s marks are visible. Mechanics are crisp and strong.
A perfect Springfield lock for the musket that needs one. [jet] [ph:L]
