Approximately 20,000 of these carbines were produced from 1886 to 1889.

Weapon has a 22.00 inch barrel that retains 10% of its original blue with the rest being a dull mottled gray with some light pitting near the muzzle. Correct blade front sight while at rear is the Buffington sight that can be adjusted for elevation and windage. Top of sight is marked with a letter “C” for carbine. Sight is complete and operates well. Left side of the barrel is stamped at breech with “V. P.” and eaglehead followed by the letter “P.” Middle of the barrel at breech is also stamped with an “A.” Bore is exceptionally clean and the rifling is good.

Barrel is attached to carbine stock by a single barrel band that retains only hints of the bluing. Top of band is grooved to allow sight leaf to rest on it.

Lock has a gray mottled appearance with a spread-winged eagle forward of the hammer and “U. S.” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Stampings are strong. Action works properly. Breech is mostly gray on the exterior with some case colors on the inside. Serial number on breech is 380788. Top of breech at hinge is crisply stamped “U.S. MODEL 1884.”

Wood stock shows only light wear from age, use and storage and presents nicely. Light cartouche is visible on left side opposite lock. Saddle bar and ring are also mounted on the left side. Triggerguard and buttplate are mostly dark.  [ad]
