NEW MODEL 1863 SHARPS CARBINE CONVERTED TO CENTERFIRE

$1,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1117-102

The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is an example of the New Model 1863 Sharps carbine that was converted to use centerfire cartridges after the Civil War and features serial #74636.

Carbine has a 22” long round barrel and a “straight-breech” type lockplate. No barrel address and a worn “NEW MODEL 1863” stamped to rear of sight. All gunmetal is in matching condition with dark gray color, darker mottling, and scattered light surface rust. Lawrence patent info still stamped on flip up rear sight.

Original butt plate features cut-out for patch box, but replacement stock that was added during conversion was not cut for patch box. Patent stamps on lockplate are clear and distinct. Serial number stamped onto the receiver tang. Breechblock operating lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics work but very light trigger pull. Bore is good with rifling.

Band spring for barrel band is cracked as is the trigger plate tang under the rear wood screw.

All wood is good. The forestock is original to the gun and has nice walnut color and finish. The shoulder stock was replaced when converted as there is no patch box. One inspector’s stamp on left side at mid-shoulder stock. Nice area of saddle wear demonstrates field use.  [jet]
