This example of a Burnside 3rd Model Carbine is complete, with serialized receiver and breech block both stamped “23787”.
Metal surfaces are mostly smooth, with scattered, fine pitting along the underside of the barrel. Barrel surface has developed a uniform plum patina. Receiver exhibits a matching patina and generally smooth surface with very little pitting. The bore is nice, with pronounced rifling and a smooth surface. Front blade sight is secure and elevated rear sights are complete and functional. The barrel band is somewhat bright while the retention spring is worn and fixed in a depressed position. A few shallow scratches are noted in the receiver. Mechanically sound, with some slight play in the breech block. Cone/nipple shows very fine pitting.
Wood stock and foregrip show wear throughout, primarily the reverse sides where the carbine would ride against equipment and the wearer while supported by a sling or riding in a carbine boot. The initials “M J” are carved into the butt stock as shown. The sling bar, ring, and surrounding receiver areas show contact wear and a slight bend from repeated use. A sling swivel is inlet and attached to the stock. Butt plate is stamped “C” and applicable breech parts and sling bar are stamped “S” and “C”.
Barrel length is 20” and overall length measures 39.5”.
