Presented here is a Model 1842 Austrian carbine in very good condition. Carbine is also called the ‘Kammer-Karabiner’ and features a huge.71 caliber barrel that is strongly rifled. Originally known as a “tube lock’ carbine, these short arms were altered to percussion after 1854 and many saw service in the American Civil War as agents for both sides sought them out in Europe and sent many carbines home for use. Carbine measures 30” long overall and features a heavy, one-piece stock, possibly sap wood. Stock is unmarked but has a high cheek piece on the left side. No repairs or breaks visible on the stock.
Carbine also has a two-piece sling ring with a bar secured to the left side of stock. All metal furniture is iron and exhibits a dark, rust brown colored patina. Barrel is 14½” long and secures to the stock with one large barrel band. Barrel and the wood appear to have been cleaned at one time. No rear sight but retains its original front sight. Hammer and lockplate are void of any markings but the left barrel facet shows three numbers “853” likely to be the year of manufacture. Other stampings are seen on the barrel facets and proof marks.
A fine, imported hand-held cannon that saw service in conflict, even possibly in the Civil War.
