This rare ammunition artifact, in good original condition, is an opened pasteboard box of ten linen cartridges made specifically for the Civil War Sharps breechloading carbine. The brown-beige colored, paper-wrapped container is a two-piece hinged box with thin wrap and measures 3” long x 2¼” wide x 1 3/16” high. Within the pasteboard box are ten, intact, .52 caliber linen cartridges stacked five on five. Top level of cartridges show a perforation in the base which has allowed black powder grains to fall out and collect in the box base. The original brown paper wrap retains its printed label in black ink that reads: “10 CARTRIDGES / For Sharps’ Improved Rifle / 52/100 caliber / SHARPS RIFLE MANUF’G CO. / HARTFORD, CONN.” Wrap is tight on the box save for the front face and side where the paper has been torn from the pull tab string opener. Entire box wears slight surface grime and has some light staining. A seldom seen Sharps’ artifact in good condition.
