This artifact from the Civil War is an unopened packet of six, 44 caliber combustible cartridges still contained in the original packing. The rectangular  shaped, brown paper wrapped packet measures 2¾” long x 1¼” wide x 3/8” high. Contains six, conical-shaped bullets in original mint condition. Entire packet is enclosed with the original, brown, waterproof paper wrap that has the maker printed label in black ink on the face.

Label reads, “SIX / JOHNSTON & DOW’S / WATERPROOF & COMBUSTIBLE / CARTRIDGES, / For Colt’s Army Revolvers, Cal. 46-100 / patented Oct. 1s/, 1861. / Box 285, 86th Street P. O. N. Y.” Though packet labeling indicates 46-100 caliber, the Union army ordnance manuals of 1861 specified a load of 30 grs of powder with a .46 caliber, 216 gr conical ball for Colt M1860 revolvers of .44 caliber.

These variations are found in prepared paper cartridges made by private contractors. U.S. government arsenals made few paper cartridges for revolvers, preferring to contract this task. Paper is cleaned and free of surface grime and completely wrapped in clear cellophane wrap. A minty, original, .44 caliber cartridge packet.
