Dovetailed wooden crate that meas. approx. 13.25 inches long x 8.50 inches wide x 8.25 inches high. The wood has much of the original dark finish and has light wear on the edges. There are also numerous minor scratches dings and dents as to be expected on a wooden box this old.

The lid has two brass hinges at the back that are in very good condition. The top front edge of the lid has a mortise meant to receive a brass escutcheon that takes a spanner bolt that holds the lid closed. The screw remains. There are no cracks in the wood.

The front of the box is stenciled with “NAVAL LABORATORY WASHINGTON” in an oval with “M. R. CARTD’GS” at center. All lettering is white and is very readable. The lid is stenciled with “AMMUNITION FOR MUSKET RIFLED. CHARGE 70 GR’S. 500 CHARGES. OCT. 1862.”

The underside of the lid has no stenciling and seems to have never been marked in anyway.

The interior of the box is painted orange on the sides while the bottom was made using a board from another box that was marked “…CAN EAGLE” which probably stands for “AMERICAN EAGLE.”

The very bottom of the box has some minor wood loss.

This crate has a wonderful untouched look and is a wonderful addition to any Civil War Navy collection.
