.50 caliber cartridge for Gallager carbine. Cartridge contains the Smith/Gallager style bullet with a single wide groove, solid base, and a pointy nose.

Cartridge was manufactured under Poultney’s patent.  The patent (#40,988 dated December 15, 1863) was originally granted to Thomas Rodman and Silas Crispin who assigned it to Thomas Poultney.  The cases were made of brass foil and paper rolled up together to form the tube. A perforation in the base allowed the percussion cap flame to ignite the charge.

A complete cartridge in excellent condition.  [jet]
