This is the standard two-cavity mold casting one spherical and one conical bullet that was supplied by Colt with each revolver in civilian and private sales, and included at the rate of about 25 for every 50 revolvers in crates sent to the government. The mold bears a crisp two-line “Colt’s Patent” stamp on top, and a “44H” on the right side, indicating it is for the Colt .44 Caliber Army revolver, the “H” being an outmoded designation for “holster” versus a .36 caliber “belt” revolver.
This has thin remnants of the dull military blue applied to molds supplied to the government with pistols, mixed with some gray, but smooth metal overall. No inspector initial is evident, but Pate indicates not all military molds were subjected to rigid inspection and marked. There is a small cluster of tiny, minor dings between the pour holes on the sprue cutter, the lower outside of the right handle and middle top of the left, along with typical small handling marks. This is a very good Colt-marked mold that would display well with a nice Colt Army. [sr]
