Cylindrical tin container holds ten roles of Maynard tape primers. Container is about 50% covered in surface rust and lid is rusted in place.
Edward Maynard embedded tiny pellets of priming material in thin strips of paper creating a "tape" of primers. He also developed an automatic feeding system that would advance the tape when the musket was cocked. The hammer not only detonated the primer, but would also automatically cut the paper, thus removing the spent portion of the tape. This is the container for these rolls of early primers.
A good piece to display with M-1855 rifle. [jet] [ph:L]
