A survivor of the Civil War, this remarkable artifact is an original and very good intact specimen of an unopened ‘Enfield’ type, .577 caliber combustible paper cartridge. Cartridge was made at the Eley Brothers Cartridge Factory in the Edmonton section of London. Produced for use with the British M1853 Enfield Rifle Musket, this example measures 3” long. The lubricated, grooveless conical lead bullet with its boxwood or clay plug in its hollow base is fitted nose-first into this cavity. An outer wrapping of white, now changed to beige color, paper joins the powder charge to the bullet. Paper is still strong and tight with some staining near the bullet base. Cartridge is in excellent condition with just normal surface dirt and a few slight scuffs the outer wrap. A scarce, fine collectible that would enhance any infantryman’s display or Civil War ammunition collection.
