This altered, flint to percussion, single-shot, smoothbore pistol is a fine and pleasing martial-marked specimen of the Model 1836 flintlock pistol produced by Asa Waters of Millbury, Massachusetts. The single-shot pistol features a ‘cone’ or Belgian style alteration with the external lock parts removed, holes plugged and a nipple screwed into top of barrel. The .54 caliber, smoothbore muzzleloading horse pistol is almost 14” long and fitted with an 8½” round barrel. All gunmetal has been cleaned at one time and exhibits a pleasing light gray sheen with scattered spots of oxidation over the surface. Lockplate is flat and flush fitted behind the hammer. Pistol has all iron furniture save for its brass front blade sight. Small oval shaped rear sight on the tang.

Stock exhibits two thin government cartouches on the left flat along with various sub-inspector marks on the barrel, side-strap, and triggerguard tang. Screws not buggered. Lockplate markings very good and show “eagle’s head / A. WATERS / MILLBURY, MS. / 1843” in front of the hammer. Stamped on the upper barrel at the breech are the proof marks “US / JM / P”. Black walnut stock is excellent and retains its feathering and sharp edges. Wears a pleasing brown patina on the wood surface. Pistol mechanics are tight and crisp but bore could use some cleaning. Pistol has the swivel type steel ramrod with a button-shaped head, also cleaned. A fine condition, Asa Waters altered flint to percussion single shot pistol.
