Seldom seen in the collecting field today is this historic and scarce 3rd Model Colt Dragoon in excellent original condition. A total of some 10,500 of these hefty Third Model Dragoon revolvers were produced by Samuel Colt at his Hartford, Connecticut facility between 1851 and 1861. This model Colt was the last of the Dragoon series production and included more variations that all the previous types (1st & 2nd models) combined. In fact, the 3rd Model Dragoon accounted for almost one-half of all these large side arms made.

This revolver, likely a civilian purchase, is a .44 caliber specimen with a 6-shot unrebated cylinder fitted to a part-round, part-octagon 8” long barrel. Barrel has a German-silver front blade sight. The horse pistol has matching serial numbers (large size standard # 19470 – later production) on the barrel, frame, loading lever, triggerguard, butt plate, cylinder, wedge and spline.

Grips are of one-piece varnished walnut for the civilian trade in excellent condition. Just few dings and little wear. No government inspector’s cartouches. Grips do exhibit a unique, intricate, German silver applique tacked to the left side grip. The 1” square device has a delicate cut-out inner design of a spreadwinged eagle at the center. In a crescent form above the eagle is printed “REPUBLIC MEXICANI / 1890” within a circle, all beautifully executed. No original case colors remain on the gunmetal which has been cleaned and highly polished to bright. Lower left side of the frame exhibits the two-line “COLT’S / PATENT” stamping on the three-screw frame.

Brass triggerguard and back strap wear a mellow bronze patina, never cleaned. Triggerguard has sub-inspector marks. This four-pound, two-ounce sidearm has a rounded, oval, brass trigger guard. The large cylinder measures 2 3/16” long and shows the six rectangular stops and the six stop slots. A remarkable, super detailed, roll engraved cylinder scene depicts the ‘Ranger and Indian’ fight scene. Also very clear on the cylinder is the engraving “MODEL U.S.M.R.” over “19470” over “COLT’S PATENT.” This revolver was never made to adapt to the detachable shoulder stock; no recoil shield cutouts nor the groove in the heel of the backstrap. In mechanically tight and crisp condition. No screws not buggered. This historic, hard to find, Colt 3rd Model Dragoon revolver is in excellent overall condition.
