This handsome, crisp, Civil War cap and ball percussion handgun is a Remington 1861 Navy revolver in excellent overall condition. In production in 1862 only, these military sidearms by Remington arms were also known as the Old Model Navy revolver. A total quantity of 7,000 of these pistols were produced. They were identical to the Model 1861 Army revolver, but just slightly smaller.
This martially-marked, standard model .36 caliber handgun has a six-shot round cylinder fitted to a 7 3/8” long octagonal barrel with concealed barrel threads at the frame breech. Plain, unrebated cylinder has no safety notches. Another feature of this revolver is the narrow channel cut along the top of its loading lever. Grips are original, two-piece walnut in excellent condition with a single, deep government inspector cartouche on the left side grip.
The five-digit serial number (#15891) is stamped into the bottom facet of the barrel above the loading lever and on the grip frame. This revolver has been cleaned at one time and retains some of its original factory bluing on the frame, cylinder, loading lever, barrel, top strap and backstrap. The weapon also appears to have been gone over to bring out and highlight the remnants of the bluing.
Revolver features a brass trigger guard, steel backstrap and the low hammer spur with sub-inspector markings on various major components. All original nipples. Barrel marking clear and reads “PATENTED DEC. 17, 1861 / MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS’ ILION, N. Y.” Mechanics are strong and crisp. Most all production of this model went to fill U.S. government orders. This Remington 1861 Navy Revolver is a fine representative sidearm of the Civil War and later.
