Maker markings: “Allen & Thurber” & “Worchester” [barrel], “Allens Patent / 1845” [hammer]. 31 caliber, five shot, double action, percussion handgun. 2.5” fluted, revolving barrel, with bar hammer & nipple shield. Hand engraved, floral pattern frame; factory pattern walnut grips with crisp maker markings. Metal work exhibits clean, medium-gray patina, pocked with patches of pitting, especially on barrel. Clean indexing & action with bar hammer & barrel. Dusty bore. Grips display minor nicks consistent with age and usage. Else VG.
Allen & Thurber pepperboxes competed well against Colts and Deringers in pre-Civil War America; gaining a reputation as a reliable and inexpensive means of defense. Quite a few were sold to emigrants heading west and not a few found their way to California with the 49ers. Solid collectible.
