Percussion six-shot, double-action revolver by C.S. Pettingill (1856), manufactured by Rodgers and Spencer, which produced 2000 purchased by the Army 1861-63. This Army model features a rifled .44 caliber barrel, 7.5” inches in length, with “Pettingills/ Patent 1856” right frame marking, and “Raymond c. Robotaillf/ Patented 1858” on left. The Pettingill hammer is contained within the frame, and the revolver has a “pepperbox” shaped trigger and trigger. It retains traces of original metallic color throughout, and has smooth, plum colored patina. Grips exhibit light wear customary with age and usage. Double-action is crisp and smooth. Bore displays slight pitting,. Else VG plus plus. A superb Pettingill, a fine collectible.  [jp]
