Known also as the “Second Model American,” 20,735 of these .44 caliber revolvers were made from 1872 to 1874, making it one of the iconic revolvers of the American west. Numbering started at about 8,000 and was mixed in with the Model No 3 Russian First Model, extending the range to about 32800. This one is serial numbered 26,965 with the standard 8-inch barrel in .44 S&W American caliber.
The walnut grips have good color, finish, and a tight fit. They show a little rounding to the bottom edge, but not much obvious wear. The nickel finish shows largely as a muted silver with scattered gray areas and rubs to gray, but only one or two small spots of freckling to the plating, mostly on the hinge. The hammer shows some faded case color and the latch some blue, as do some of the screws. The top of the barrel has the correct barrel address and patent dates, sharp and fully legible with no gray spots. There are some shallow scratches on the cylinder and some small dings on the frame at the hinge on the right, forward of the cylinder. This has the small hump at the trigger pin, steel front sight, and notched hammer characteristic of this model.
This is a classic Smith and Wesson we are happy to offer that would be a great addition to a collection and display, dating to prime years of the “wild west.” [SR]
