In very good overall condition, this early production cap and ball percussion sidearm is a Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver. The identification shows “Wm Goodwin” lightly hand-scratched on the brass triggerguard inner strap. No research done on Wm. Goodwin as yet. The Colt Army revolver was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict. Model 1860 revolvers were in production from 1860 through 1873 and were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols.
This sidearm is an early .44 caliber, four-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and the early 8” long barrel. Original walnut grips have been repaired (likely a period fix). Half the right side grip was split and lost but the section was fitted and replaced with part of an original walnut grip piece. A thin single government cartouche seen on the left grip. Left grip has a very small period chip on front butt corner and a larger chip at the frame/triggerguard. No original case or bluing but the gun metal shows a pleasing medium gray patina overall. Has light areas of pinprick rusting.
Matching serial numbers #27757 appears on the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, butt strap, and wedge. Serial # dates the manufacture in the 1st and 2nd quarter of 1862. This martial sidearm has the recoil shield cutouts on the frame and a shallow notch in the backstop indicating a martial arm. Mechanics are strong. Barrel address is visible but thin. Cylinder naval scene worn away. “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame is clear. All original nipples fine. Safeties all hammered down. Frame screws very good and not buggered. This early war production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver is a great representative sidearm of the Civil War at a reasonable price. [ra] [ph:L]
