Adopted in 1925– the 14th year of the Taisho period- these eight-round semi-auto pistols are chambered for the 8x22mm Nambu and were engineered to be simpler and cheaper to produce than the rather expensive Type-B, using a simplified rear sight, fixed lanyard loop, simplified cocking mechanism, etc. This one is in good condition, complete, showing some dings to the upper portions of the wood grips around the magazine release button, but decent finish on the barrel assembly, triggerguard, and cocking knob, though with some thinning of finish on the sides of the frame.

The date marking indicates manufacture in April 1944. The grips still use grooves to improve the hold, in this case 17 in number. The cocking knob is the also the typical grooved type rather than the simplified last-ditch style. The magazine is also numbered to the pistol, showing “433” with the serial number of the pistol being 19433.

These were standard side-arms for Japanese officers and a favorite G.I. bring-back- a little easier to fit in a duffle bag than a samurai sword.  [sr][ph:L]
