Here is a fine condition, legendary American revolver by Colt, often called the “Peacemaker” aka the “Frontier Six Shooter”.  Termed the standard model, this type of sidearm was purchased by the US Army in large quantities and issued to its soldiers during the post-Civil War days of the Indian Wars. The S.S.A. saw plenty of action in the old west in the hands of both lawmen and outlaws.  Not martially marked.  This early production specimen is the popular .44.40 caliber centerfire, single action revolver with a six-shot cylinder, 4¾” long round barrel, loading gate, ejector rod, cylinder pin retaining screw, and the ‘rampart colt’ hard rubber grips.

Sidearm bears serial number 126369 and Colt records indicate that it was produced in 1888.  No serial # on the cylinder. Assembly # on loading gate is 210. Finish was standard blued but the existing finish has turned to a pleasing dark plum-brown patina.  No case colors remain on hammer.  Trigger appears to be a replacement with much bluing left.  All other metal has color consistent with age and use. Barrel address markings read “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. / HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” in block lettering.   Three line patent dates on left side of frame read “PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871 / PAT JULY 2, 72, PAT JAN. 19, 75.” Mechanics are crisp and strong.

A handsome and powerful sidearm, this 44.40 cal Colt S.S.A. revolver permitted the western cowboy, sheriff, marshal, and frontiersman to carry only one type of ammo for both his Model 1873 Winchester and his Colt Peacemaker. A classic firearm.
