This vintage Whitney ‘Navy’ Civil War percussion 4th type, 2nd model, revolver appears to have been heavily cleaned and converted to .38 caliber rimfire cartridge from its original .36 caliber percussion use at the Eli Whitney Company factory in New Haven, Connecticut. The US Navy-marked revolver wears the small anchor stamped on the top flat of the 7 5/8” long barrel near the frame and was issued to Marines and Navy personnel during the war. Frame has the loading groove at the right side. Barrel has the brass pin-style front sight. Serial # 25146 is matching and falls within the navy range.
A complete specimen, this cartridge converted sidearm is in very good overall condition with its factory tinning or nickel-plating on all gunmetal. Areas of plating have worn off and show dark oxidation. Cylinder has the 5/16” thick ring with slightly rebated chambers at the back. Retains no scene. Cylinder bears the stampings “GG” (Guert Gansevoort) on the front edge. It also has the six safety notches at the back. Revolver bears matching serial numbers of “25146” on the iron loading lever and also on the inside of the both grips.
Very good, two-piece walnut grips show old re-varnish traces with smooth even wear and displays the rounded juncture at the iron frame. Left side grip shows an old chip at the right corner. Barrel address marking is worn away save for a partial “N. HAVEN” on the top barrel flat. Sidearm exhibits a small trigger guard and iron backstrap. In mechanically tight and crisp condition, the revolver features an exterior surface that shows scattered light to moderate pitting and wear marks, all consistent with this weapons age and use. All screws not buggered. This rare Whitney ‘Navy’ model revolver conversion makes a fine addition to any collection of cartridge conversion naval small arms.
