This is a Springfield manufactured muzzleloader that has been converted to a breechloader using the Erskin S. Allin design. The conversion was completed at the Springfield Armory. The muskets used a .58 caliber rimfire cartridge. The breech was also converted to the distinctive ‘trapdoor” breechblock. Finishes were the same as the model 1863 muskets. Lockplate markings are an Eagle” with” U.S.” over SPRINGFIELD” and the date 1865. Springfield altered only 5,000 of these muskets.
Lockplate and hammer are blued with crisp markings. All other iron is a gunmetal gray patina. Crisp working mechanism. Bore is excellent and bright. The stock is a light patina and has some nicks and scratches from normal use. One cartouche, located on the opposite side of the lockplate is visible but faint. This is a nice example of the 1st Allin converted Springfield.
