This original Civil War longarm is a very fine condition, “Springfield” Model 1863, Type 2, .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader. The rifle musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts manufactured in late 1863 through 1865. Over two hundred and fifty thousand of these muskets were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Dept. during those war years.
All gunmetal very lightly cleaned and exhibits a pleasing, smooth, bright finish. Lockplate surface also bright with a smooth finish. “1863” stamped behind the “S” shaped hammer. Lock stampings of the “Eagle” and “US / SPRINGFIELD” are distinct and strong. The hammer with its chamfered, beveled edges has the same smooth bright patina as the rest of the lockplate components. Barrel breech area bright and exhibits a strong date “1863” on the flat. Also, very sharp proof marks seen on the left barrel facet. Original nipple and rear sight.
Mechanics crisp. Bore is strong and bright. Steel tulip-shaped ramrod is original and wears the same semi-bright finish. Some very light pitting near the tulip tip. All barrel bands are original, stamped with small “u” and secured to the stock via flat iron springs. Black walnut stock surface very good; may have been light refinished at one time. Solid stock with no cracks, splits. Flat shows a thin government cartouche and a minor surface repair on left side. Still exhibits a number of light scuff marks with minor dings and nicks. A very fine representative Model 863 Springfield rifle musket of the Civil War.
