This original British contract longarm is a .577 caliber, Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, single-shot muzzleloader in good overall condition. Of all the British arms, the Pattern 1853 Type III rifle-musket is perhaps the best known and regarded weapon that replaced all earlier infantry models in the British Army.
Weapon measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. The lockplate surface is dusky gray and exhibits a mild peppery look from scattered rust pitting. Lock markings are the standard Victoria’s “crown” back of the hammer and sharp, no ‘V. R.’ letters (likely an export). Lockplate face bears block letters “1862 / TOWER”. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Barrel surface appears to have been cleaned and wears a pleasing light colored sheen. Unusual proof marks visible on the left barrel facet show viewer’s marks and gauge #s 24 and 25.
Specimen has a dark bore that has lost most of its 3-groove rifling. All brass furniture. Black walnut stock is strong with a surface that is dark and uncleaned. No cracks visible but entire stock shows wear with minor dings, dents and light scuffs from age and use. Stock maker’s name “A(?) MARSON” stamped on underside of shoulder stock. Also found are stamped digits “50” behind the barrel tang. An attractive original British Enfield pattern M1853 rifle musket.
