This Civil War longarm is a Springfield Model 1863, Type 2, .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader. This rifled-musket, a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts, was manufactured in late 1863 through 1865. Over two hundred and fifty thousand of these muskets were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Dept. during the war years.

All gunmetal exhibits a dull, light gray patina with scattered rust pitting overall. Moderate to heavy pitting is near the breech and bolster area. Lockplate surface also shows pitting and dark oxidation spots. Lock exhibits the “spreadwinged eagle” and “US / SPRINGFIELD” in sharp and clear stampings. Date “1864” stamped behind the “S” shaped hammer. The hammer with its chamfered, beveled edges has the same dull gray patina as the rest of the components. Barrel breech area exhibits no date on the flat. Strong barrel proof marks are visible on the left barrel facet. Original nipple and rear sight. Mechanics crisp. Bore is dark and has pitting. Steel tulip-shaped ramrod is reproduction. All barrel bands original, stamped with small “u” and secured to the stock via band springs.

Black walnut stock surface in good condition and appears lightly gone over at one time. Stock solid with no cracks, splits. Flat has worn edges but still retains two visible government cartouches. Stock bears a number of scuff marks with minor dings and nicks likely from storage over the years. Original leather musket sling, though stiff, is complete and still attached to both sling swivels. Sling itself is torn at the leather loop adjuster near the triggerguard. Sling leather body retains a maker’s stamp, but it is difficult to discern. A representative Model 1863 Springfield rifle musket of the Civil War.
