Longarm specimen is an original M1816 model musket made by W. L. Evans of Evansburg, Pennsylvania, sometimes referred to as Valley Forge. The gun maker, Evans who produced some 5,000 muskets circa 1825 to 1830, has his name mis-spelled (W. L. Evens) on the lockplates. This flintlock is in original condition and was never converted to cap and ball. Musket is a smoothbore .69 caliber, single shot muzzleloader that retains all its original parts in good condition. Iron lockplate is flat and raised at the front and slightly tapered at the tail and measures 6 5/8” long. Lockplate is dated and marked “1826 / US” behind the hammer (cock). In front of hammer, plate reads “W. L. EVENS / V. FORGE”. J

aw retains its leather pad and an original flint. The cock, steel (frizzen), battery springs, pan, and comb, cock screw, top and lower jaw, neck screws are original. Black walnut stock is dark and appears to have been cleaned at one time. Retains one light government cartouche and hand-carved initials “C P N.” Stock butt also has a previous owner’s brass, oval stamp tacked at the tang. Iron butt plate stamped “US” in horizontal line. Barrel breech has stampings at the left side that read “L S U S / P.” Breech tang is dated “1826.”

Musket has a 42” long barrel secured to the black walnut stock by three iron bands. All gunmetal has been cleaned and now wears a dusty medium gray surface with scattered pitting and oxidation overall. A large, 9½” long trigger guard secures the sling swivel at the bow while the middle barrel band supports the second swivel. Mechanics are very strong, very crisp. Bore is moderately to heavily rust pitted. Retains original button-head ramrod with its threaded tip. A nice, seldom-seen unaltered M1816 non-altered Evans flintlock musket typically used by militia in the early 19th century.
