In 1842, the need for more modern percussion ignition systems on US military arms signaled the end of the flintlock age and started the age of the percussion firearm. This original longarm is a .69 caliber Springfield Model 1842 smoothbore musket in good, cleaned condition. All gunmetal surfaces exhibit a bright shiny gray finish free of pitting and oxidation.

Lockplate shows the standard “Eagle / US” and “SPRING / FIELD / 1850”.  Mechanics are strong. The bright barrel bears no rear sight as normal and has the government proofmarks of “V / P / eaglehead” on left side of breech. Original nipple is present. There is no pitting or dirt build-up around or near the nipple. Area is very clean. Date of 1850 is stamped on the barrel tang (numeral ‘0’ is thin). Smooth bore is clean and bright. All the other iron components are consistent.

Black walnut stock is in good condition with just minor dings and dents from use and storage. Single faint cartouche visible on flat. No repairs visible to wood. Retains both upper swivel sling and swivel at triggerguard. Has its original trumpet head ramrod with the threaded tip intact.

A great representative Model 1842 Springfield smoothbore musket.
