M1861, .58 caliber, three band percussion musket. Lock-plate dated “U.S./Whitneyville” & “1863”. Barrel & butt markings: “1863/VP eagle” and “US”, plus two left wrist inspector cartouches, three sub-inspector “B”s, and matching barrel band “U”s. All markings crisp and legible. Ramrod present. Barrel bore exhibits moderate pitting. Percussion nipple clean, cocking action sharp and crisp. All metal parts semi-bright w/light scratching. Dark walnut stock and butt exhibit minor dings & bruises consistent with age and usage. In all, VG and highly attractive. Handsome Whitney lockplate, great display piece.
